Description

The Target Art School offering art classes and a kids party venue is an independent studio / school in in Port Elizabeth that provides a variety of educational options for the community within the Nelson Mandela Metropole.

The school boasts a large equipped studio space, where various classes, short courses and workshops are offered through the course of the year.

Classes that are ongoing through the course of the year are:

Art Enrichment Programme:

Suitable for senior school students and post matric. This programme has been running for the past six years and has taken students from schools that do not offer art as well as schools that do and geared these students with the necessary art skills to be accepted into universities around the country.

The focus on the programme is:

Personal portfolio preparation as well as compulsory portfolio preparation for tertiary institutes, exploration in art practice, visual literacy, and introduction to various visual art disciplines including: photography, fashion, textile and graphic design, painting, sculpture and paper engineering.

Child Art:

Suitable for children from 6yrs to 12yrs. Includes: exploration of visual art through story telling, demonstrations in ways of seeing and the uses of 2D and 3D art materials.

Adult Art Classes:

Drawing and painting classes for adults in a relaxed informal environment that is both social and educational. Includes: drawing with a variety of mediums, techniques in oils and acrylic painting.

Short courses and workshops:

- Drawing: six weeks, short courses
- Creativity Workshops on Saturday mornings
- Live Model Drawing group on Saturdays
- Jewellery Art Workshop: four weeks, short courses

Need a party venue?

There are two main venues for hire at Art on Target.

Hall:

The hall is a beautiful space with stained glass windows running the length of one wall, which enhances the ambience with exquisite light and colour. The hall is suitable for workshops, seminars, demonstrations, concerts, birthday parties, small weddings and private functions. The hall is 9 x 14m and has its own entrance and exit. It has 75 chairs and a piano available for use, as well as six speakers in the ceiling for a mic or acoustic needs. Bathroom facilities are also available. The Hall is a registered independent fringe exhibition space with the Standard Bank National Arts Festival.

Pool Lapa Area:

Situated at the foot of the cliff adjacent to Target Kloof Road, the pool lapa area is private and separate from the rest of Art on Target. The pool lapa area is suitable for informal birthday parties, end of year and private functions. The pool lapa has a braai area and utility basins with plenty of plug points and lights, for night time use. Chairs and tables are available on request. Bathroom facilities are also available.The hall and pool lapa area can either be hired in conjunction with or separately from each other.

Target Market

The home grown, hand made Target Market takes place once a quarter at Art on Target, 2 Target Kloof, Essexvale, Port Elizabeth. The Target Market has a tranquil setting on the edge of the Baakens River and is an indoor / outdoor market that supports people that produce with heart, care and consciousness.

The focus is on creating a platform for local growers, producers and crafters where they can engage with the public directly. The public can enjoy finding new and unique products from a special selection of stall holders as well as food and entertainment that varies every quarter the Target Market is held.

The criteria for stall holders, is that their products fall into any of these arenas: home grown, hand made, homespun, handcrafted, home brew and that their stall is well presented. Stalls at previous markets have included: candles, fresh produce, savoury and sweet bakes, indigenous plants, mulch, crystals, seedlings, breads, unique crafts and home ware, atchar’s and pate’s, delicious boerie rolls, homemade pies, ginger beer and lemonade, mime artists, activities for children and much more.

Entrance to the Target Market is free. Secure parking for visitors.

Music Cafe

The Music Cafe is a cafe style setting with tables and chairs for concerts in the genres of acoustic, jazz, instrumental, cabaret, comedy and one man shows. The Art on Target Music Cafe was started through a need for an informal venue, where the performer / musician is the focus and patrons can enjoy a meal while watching the show without noise or interruptions. Light meals are inclusive in the ticket price.

Ticket prices vary from R80 to R120 per person.

Available to purchase at the concerts are:Soft drinks, tea or coffee, desserts and soups. There is no alcohol sold on the premises, but patrons can bring their own drinks and glasses.

The Art on Target Music Cafe is a registered independent music venue with the Standard Bank National Arts Festival 2013.
