Description

Dr Anita Prag is a clinical psychologist based in Bergvliet in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.

Deciding to see a psychologist and finding the right one for yourself or loved one can feel quite daunting at first. A productive therapeutic process is founded on good rapport between therapist and client. It is through this relationship that difficult and often intolerable feelings; distorted thinking and behavioral patterns as well as unhealthy interactive styles can be explored in a safe, non judgmental empathic space. I aim to offer a warm, containing and vibrant atmosphere in which clients can learn about themselves and in turn improve the quality of their lives.

I am a clinical psychologist in private practice in the Southern Suburbs, Cape Town. Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa - PS0099694 and Board of Healthcare Funders. I am contracted to all medical aids.

About Me

I obtained my Masters in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling at Stellenbosch University in 2006. As part of my training I worked at 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg and completed community service at Air Force Base Langebaanweg, 4 Special Forces Langebaan and Saldhana Naval Base.

Before moving to private practice in 2013, I spent 5 years at 2 Military Hospital as a Senior Psychologist in the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS). This afforded me the opportunity to work with the range of psycho/social, neuro developmental and psychiatric problems.

I have worked closely with a Neuro developmental Pediatrician, Psychiatrists and other medical specialists, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists in service of patient care. As 2 Mil is a teaching hospital I have supervised the training of interns in their clinical work and their development as clinical psychologists and remain interested in doing therapy with or supervising psychologists.

I am a registered PhD candidate at UCT researching mother-toddler relationships, risk factors that affect this relationship and theory of mind development in toddlers.

My Approach

When working with children and adolescents I take a collaborative approach during my initial assessment of the nature of the difficulty being experienced. I do this by means of talking to the primary caregiver/s and any other significant adults also involved in the child’s life. My assessment will inform the plan for intervention.

In therapy, I aim to understand the world in which my client lives. We are shaped not only by our experiences within our specific contexts but also by societal and socioeconomic pressures. In the initial consults our conversations will serve to catalyse meaningful insights about your situation. Therapy will also provide a supportive foundation from which to action these insights.

Each client is unique in their presentation. As such, I will tailor my approach using insight oriented psycho dynamic therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques after a thorough assessment.

Please contact me should you wish to get more information about the process and how I work.
